When you select your adventure there are a couple of questions you need to answer to optimize your experience.

The first is what time of year to come. We roughly have 3 distinct “Seasons” :

1. The Maximum Whitewater season extends from May through early to mid June. The water is high, the flowers are out, it is fast,exciting and adventurous. This is a great time for kayakers and the wild at heart. This is not a good time for children or quests with limited physical abilities.

2. The Peak Season is from mid June through August. The river is warmer but still has great whitewater, the weather is at it’s warmest, the days are long and the fishing is great. 

3. Our Fall Sportsman’s Paradise is from early September through October. The nights begin to cool down and the water cools, which triggers the fish to pick up the pace of feeding before winter. The whitewater crowd has gone back to school and the canyon is VERY quiet. Fishing is generally red hot. We almost always have about half as many guests while having the full crew of guides, so your adventure is very “personalized”.

The second question you need to answer is “Do I want a guaranteed fishing seat?”

To make an educated decision, you need to understand our fleet and typical configuration of boats.

We will utilize a variety of boats in our fleet to create the optimal adventure for you and your friends. Please note that we have made significant upgrades in our boats since our video and DVD have been published, which will increase your enjoyment.                                         

Boat Style #2 – “Oar” Boats Note that this boat is operated by one Guide who “oars” the boat to maneuver down the river. It carries a modest supply of gear necessary for operations on the river such as water and lunch. There are generally 2 to 4 guests riding on each oar boat each day. All you need to do is hang on and enjoy! You can choose to kick back and relax or possibly fish from this boat as it descends the river. Generally only two people can really fish at a time although more may be riding in the boat at that time.

Boat Style #3 – Our exclusively dedsigned “Paddle Cat” This boat is a personally designed “Porsche” of the river. There has never been any other like it on the Middle Fork. When riding in this boat you will be actively participating in the paddling of this craft under the command of a guide. It will take all of your efforts to make safe passage. It can be operated with as few as 4 guests but can easily carry as many as 8 at one time. This boat is fast, maneuverable and incredibly agile. You will definitely be “eye to eye” with the whitewater at all times. We regularly “hole hunt” huge waves that everyone else makes great efforts to avoid. We normally do not bring the paddle boat on our Kayak support trips or Dedicated Fishing trips unless other arrangements have been made.

Boat Style #4 – Personal “Inflatable Kayaks”  These belong to the adventuresome. There is no greater opportunity for you to really get wet and attack the whitewater. For many this is the highlight of the week’s adventure. We will work with you to ensure that you begin your paddling on appropriate stretches of water that match your skills and desires. We will watch you, guide you and rescue you if necessary. But make no mistake about it. You will be the master of your own fate. I HIGHLY encourage you to give these a try. They are an absolute blast. We normally bring at least 4 each week, but can bring more or less depending upon the makeup and desires of each week’s guests. Let us know if you desire to spend a lot of time in one and we can make it happen.

           

Boat Style #5 – Dedicated “Fishing Boat” – 14 Aire Inflatable with Fishing Stations for two fishermen with NO extra gear and or weight. (New to the Fleet in 2008!)     These boats are only utilized when guests desire and make arrangements for “Dedicated Fishing Boats”. This boat is beyond maneuverable. There has never been ANY boat that is more suitable to creating the perfect fly fishing platform on the Middle Fork.

Consider what this provides for you:

1. This boat is significantly lighter and more maneuverable than even a traditional Drift Boat.

2. It is clean, so you will not struggle to keep your lines untangled.

3. It does not have any gear in it needed for camp activities, hence you can leave camp earlier, arrive later, show up to lunch long after the other boats were required etc. This allows for incredible flexibility with the schedule.

4. It is rubber and hence more forgiving than a drift boat, which will enable you to go places  would never consider, such as scraping over ledges and rocks. Finally, rubber is extremely quiet, a huge advantage to fishermen and wilderness lovers alike

5. Two fishermen can comfortably fish AT THE SAME TIME! Watch. a drift boat go down the river. By contrast One guest can fish while the other has to sit and watch in our fishing boat you will get TWICE the fishing since you are not in a drift boat.

6. More comfortable than any other fishing boat ever offered. Both seats have high back support, you have a hard suspended floor to stand on, and leg rests to lean against while casting.

7. While all of our guides are excellent, only the very best are offered the opportunity to operate our dedicated fishing boats. You will not have a “river guide” leading you through your day, you will have a great “fishing guide” who happens to be expert at running whitewater.

8. This boat option definitely costs more, but if you are looking to really fish, it is absolutely worth it.

9. Please Note: These boats can not always be used on our Cast and Blast trips because of the increase in gear needed, ie guns, dogs etc.

Trip Options

The Middle Fork is a delightful 100-mile mix of relaxed drifting (or fishing!) and churning class II–IV white water!

The Standard Seating option is for guests who want to take turns helping crew guided paddle rafts and enjoying the ride (or trout fishing) in guided oar rafts. You can expect to have at least one to two days of fishing from our boats with this option if you desire. Guests may fish anytime we’re on shore and possibly hike some tributaries as well. Those who'd like to get a bit more exercise can "run solo" now and then for extra white water thrills in our optional inflatable kayaks if they wish! No one is ever required to run in the inflatable kayaks if they do not desire. There may be stretches of river and or river conditions in which the guides will determine that inflatable kayak operations are unsafe for use so total time in them may be restricted. If you wish to run and inflatable kayak more than 2 days on the trip please let us know so that we can bring an inflatable kayak specifically for your use. Depending on the wishes of other guests, it is sometimes possible to spend all one’s time in just one or the other type of boat, although this is not guaranteed with the Standard seating option unless you have made arrangements with us before the launch.

The Guaranteed Fishing Seat option is for guests who want to be able to fish all day every day. You will have a boat and guide that are very specifically designed, skilled and equipped to provide you with a world class fishing adventure. This is a great option because it allows for maximum flexibility and enables you to leave camp early, and arrive in camp late because your boat will not have any gear necessary for the rest of the trip and your guide will be exclusively tasked with your fishing adventure . There is a higher charge for this service because not only does it require additional gear but it usually requires an extra guide on the payroll which consequently eliminates one of the marketable seats for that launch date. However if you are seeking a world class dry fly fishing adventure, there is none better. It is generally required that Guaranteed Fishing boats be arranged in numbers of two but give us a call and we can see what can be arranged.

Maximum Whitewater trips are the launches from May through June 8^th, Peak Season launches are June 17^th through August 29^th. September launches vary from year to year so please call.

Prices do not include approximately 4% tax or possible flight into launch site on the river, when conditions require, which is approximately $115 payable directly to the air charter company.
