Experiencing a Total Solar Eclipse and Rafting the Middle Fork of the Salmon River–a Once in a Lifetime Opportunity!

On August 21, 2017 a rare total solar eclipse will arc across the U.S., passing over Stanley, Idaho and the Middle Fork of the Salmon River!

Not since 1979 has there been a total solar eclipse viewable in the continental U.S.

Although there will be a total eclipse through Texas to the Northeast in 2024, the next eclipse sweeping across the entire US continent will not happen until 2045, and that eclipse will be south of Idaho.

Stanley, Idaho, the gathering place for launching on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, will be a premier viewing site for the August eclipse, with a totality of 2 minutes, 13 seconds and a good probability of clear skies.

When I heard about the eclipse and learned that it would coincide with an Adventure Sun Valley rafting trip I contacted Brad Frei, outfitter of Adventure Sun Valley, to reserve a place for the trip. Brad was immediately excited to incorporate a special eclipse experience into the rafting adventure.

So what is so special about a total solar eclipse?

I am just a rafter and have never seen a total eclipse, but the more I learn about them, the more fascinating they appear to be.

Some people describe viewing a total eclipse as life changing. They report that as the sky darkens stars appear, that as totality approaches there is a “diamond ring” appearance as the edge of the sun disappears, and there is an eerie sense as birds react as if it were dawn or dusk. There may be a noticeable cooling. Eclipsophiles have been known to chase eclipses all over the world. They declare that a partial eclipse just won’t do.

I am excited to experience this spectacular event and then to share the thrill of rafting the Middle Fork of the Salmon River.
